Barring the desire for new clothes, she's very good at being okay with the hand life has given her. She kept her complaints to herself, and felt others should do the same. Before she discovered her power over heat, she hated her friends complaining about being mermaids while using mermaid powers casually. She is the first to suggest using powers for a quick laugh, and to joke about revealing their secret. Actually joking about everything is her coping mechanism for... everything. She likes sarcasm, a lot, its her friend. These turn into weapons if she wants to drive people away (her other defense mechanism). She was aware that revealing themselves as mermaids would end badly, but didn’t see the need to dwell (and repeat) the message. However her acts of childish rath and bullheaded stubbornness do vanish in an emergency when she needs to take charge. In a crisis she's as calm and level headed as they come, she's also got little fear or worry in her head muddling up issues. This allows her to choose, and act, where her friends would dilly dally and contemplate. Once the crisis passes she returns to her old ways, and will have no trouble pushing any blame on everyone else, especially those at fault but especially those she thinks are at fault (even if they aren't). The only issue comes when her choices are wrong, but she points out at least she did something. She does have a softer side, it doesn't show much. She’s kind when she realizes she was just a bit too cruel in her hotheaded impulses, or if someone really needs the help. Her feminine side is similarly saved for a special occasion or two. She'll happily dress up in a pretty dress when its right, and she'll enjoy it. Day to day her clothes are comfortable and working, cause she knows whatever she wears it’ll look good on her. If you tapdance around an issue she will just ask you to spit it out because she doesn't want to waste the time on those silly coy feelings. In turn when she's feeling coy she stuffs that feeling in a box and just yells at people. She views indecisiveness as a weakness, and her rough lone fishwolf life tells her not to show such things too often. Age, and a sudden position of being responsible for her friends, mellowed her usual coping tricks. Putting her into her ‘state of emergency’ more readily when she's in charge of a business or watching out for her friends. Her business, as her family isn’t very well off, matters enough that her personal desire to be a carefree rebel spirit on hold. Since she’s very aware of what money is worth, and that you have to sacrifice to get anywhere. With her friends it’s a similar matter, she might want to do things her own way, but keeping her friends safe comes first. Her decisive nature helps her business sense, but it often makes her come off as bossy with her friends (since she's always certain she's right). She does mean well, but someone must make the choices. Without her dad, her friends, or her business as a concern to chain her into a responsible role, she'll default to her loner tendencies... and be sarcastic and joking about all things. She has nothing to lose, so she can be herself freely. So, overall she's a hot and cold running tomboy mermaid, with kick butt superpowers and knows it. Which, oddly, is how this story starts. Rikki sabotaging a rich jerk's boat, he in turn uses it as a prank on a girl afraid of water, and Rikki comes in to the rescue... and then steals the boat with her new damsel Cleo. They pick up Cleo's friend Emma and explore in their borrowed water vehicle. ...until it runs out of gas. But they are close enough to an island called Mako to paddle to shore and see if they can get a call out for help. Of course there's no signal on the beach so they head inland until they stumble on a cave, a beautiful natural indoor pool, and magic. They swim out of that pool but not before the full moon passes overhead. They get rescued by proper authorities when they get outside the cave on the reef. It's the next day each girl discovers the weirdness of their new lives. First, each has a run-in with water and change. Scales, a tail, looking vaguely like a mermaid. Then they discover in turn each has a mystical power attached. Cleo's ability to manipulate water, Emma's ability to freeze it, and Rikki's heating it up. Shortly after Cleo's friend Lewis finds out about them and becomes their secret keeper, setting them up as a close knit clique of four, hiding this from the world. The four of them have plenty of misadventures in their beautiful Australian resort town. Each one making mistakes, getting in trouble, and the group working to get them out of it. The biggest and most dangerous for them being Dr. Denman and Zane (the 'rich jerk' from the start off this story) each hunting for Mermaids. Denman's hunt is scientific, she got ahold of a cell sample. Zane saw Emma swimming... twice. Which makes the fact Rikki and Zane eventually get to know each other and start dating complicated. Equal parts Zane and Rikki like each other, and Rikki is trying to keep Zane off the trail. Eventually however both discover the truth, and this is where the difference between the two is found. Zane is quick to discover trying to run tests on the trio is wrong, and help free them. Denman (and Zane's father) put all the more effort into the study of the most fascinating discovery of all time. With the help of Zane, Lewis, and a Lunar eclipse the girls fake losing their powers and get all the current mermaid hunters off their track. Next year is even more complicated than last, Cleo and Lewis date, then break up, then Lewis starts dating a new girl Charlotte. Who is not good for helping to maintain this secret or for them getting help as they need it. Zane returns to town and shortly discovers the rumors of the girls being human are greatly exaggerated, and starts dating Rikki again. And Charlotte not only discovers the secret, she becomes a mermaid herself, goes mad with power, and is a new and different problem. Thanks again to convenient astronomy, a planetary alignment gives the chance for a mermaid to lose her powers forever. Charlotte, seeing herself as a super mermaid, attempts to use this moment to remove the competition and regain Lewis's sole attention. Rikki, Cleo, and Emma manage to win the day and Charlotte loses her powers, but promises to keep the secret because she has a change of heart. Each of the three mermaids has a boy now, and the boy knows what they are. It all looks pretty good. Now we cut a few months as the holiday before school ends, Emma has left to travel the world with her family, leaving Cleo and Rikki to fend for themselves with only the help of Zane and Lewis. Rikki and Zane open a cafe in Rikki's name, and life is looking pretty normal. ...Barring things like a tentacle of living water attacking them on the full moon. The girls make a new friend, Bella, and discover she's been a mermaid since she was 9. This also brings in Will, a free diver who was at the moon pool when the water tentacle attacked. With a new mermaid to fill out the trio, a new boy seeking to know what happened to him on a weird full moon night, and her new life running a cafe with school and mermaids. Rikki's got a lot on her plate. Rikki prioritizes the secret over any friendship possibilities with Will, especially with Bella's growing crush. Trying to take Emma's role as responsible one in the group. It doesn't work out well, Will finds out everything eventually. Fortunately he's too enamoured of the mermaid lifestyle to really try and out them. Zane grows more problematic as he and Rikki butt heads over business and mermaid issues, especially with Sophie (Will's greedy older sister) doing what she can to both get Rikki's job and Zane's love. A run-in with the Water tentacle causes Rikki to grow distant and spend most of her days on Mako Island. Practicing with her magic and putting more space between her and the others. Trying to figure out what the Water Tentacle wants, as she could command it so she can't see why it attacked them before. Sophie and Ryan (a curious and bull headed scientist Cleo accidentally told too much about Mako Island too) keep pushing to know more and its getting harder to keep things a secret. Not only that the girls discover why the Water Tentacle is appearing, a meteor is heading for Earth of the same kind of minerals as the island the girls gained their power. The rock of the island is very drawn to itself, meaning a meteor that should just pass the Earth will be drawn down to the Earth and be... well, bad. The girls find an old legend about the last time the meteor passed the Earth, of a girl heading toward the moon pool in Ireland and a pillar of light fending off the meteor. The girls go to do this only to discover in Sophie and Ryan's greed they destroyed parts of the moon pool with mining for the blue crystals each girl wears. Once Will and his sister have it out the girls manage to draw out the power to create a pillar of energized water to fend the meteor off again, assuming they won't survive creating it. ...But the do! Happy endings are important, the girls survive and also graduate high school, lucky them! Rikki and Zane make up... well, what Rikki would call making up, which is just being playful when she says she never wants to see him again. Everyone gets their happy ending, and everything works out in the end.
- The Change: Rikki was turned into a mermaid when she was 15. Ten seconds of exposure to water (technically liquids with a 30% water content) causes her to change. She reverts to normal when completely dry. Fortunately her own blood/sweat/tears etc do not cause the change. During the change her clothes, hair product, hair ties, and anything else she's carrying magically vanishes, to return when she dries (neat bonus: her clothes and property are completely dry and all her stuff is undamaged by the water). In Bastion as this is a survival ability and pretty important to the character, I want this to stick around as a constant threat of happening. - Anatomy: In mermaid form she has a long orange scaled tail, and scale covering over her chest. Her tail is incredibly powerful and can bend steel when used to slam, and swim at great speeds (faster than a dolphin, but not by much). Lung capacity is greatly increased, being able to stay underwater for somewhere between 15-20 minutes at a time on a single breath. Also depth is no obstacle other than running out of air. As this is tied to the transforming into a mermaid and survival as a mermaid, it’s also a constant power (although her tail slam will be limited to 3 per day). - Magic: Mermaids also have a magical property to them, which works even in human form. Powers over water and nature. In Rikki's case its heat. Rikki can heat up water/rocks/objects or start a fire with just a gesture of her hand, and can causes lightning strikes and electrical surges. However they do require gestures, her fingers have to be free to move for this to work. In Bastion the ability to heat up non-water things is reduced so she can’t boil people alive (but can heat dry herself out of her mermaid form), her Lightning is equal to that of a regular use of Thunder. This power is active and not survival related, so three uses of heat/fire, and three of lightning per day. - Other: Mermaids are conduits of magical energies. How this can be used isn't exactly explained. There's a potion that lets mermaid's grant wishes, as an example. Rikki is very attuned to magic, at least magics attached to moons and nature. She'll likely feel big magical dangery things if they are on a massive scale, but otherwise this power doesn’t do much in canon except act as Deus Ex Plot. In Bastion this qualifies as not going to come up unless mod approval says it can be used for Deus Ex Plot reasons. - Lunacy: Mermaids are reactive to the light of the full moon, as well as the general state of the stars above during a full moon. It causes mermaids (human or mer form) a loss of inhibitions, impulsiveness, memory loss, and other more erratic effects (lost powers, gained powers, no real rhyme or reason to them). In Bastion (if and when there is a moon), the impacts are reduced due to a lack of other celestial bodies. Looking at the moon will cause her a loss of inhibitions, impulsiveness, childishness, and memory loss until the moon cycles and the clouds cover it. (She’ll also be really pissed at whoever added a moon to the world). - Moon Crystal: Rikki has a small necklace with a blue crystal on it. On it's own it's worthless, but with another like stone it creates a light with the same effect as moonlight (and can cause mild power outages). Mostly she wears it as a sign of friendship with two of her fellow mermaids, and it was a gift from a boy she helped avoid drowning. In game it's... a piece of rock that if someone found a way to unlock it's moon powers could do a thing or be used to make a thing... not that Rikki would part with it easily. | |||||||
